I'm curious about what would cause this yet leave all letters and numbers near perfect

It's some kind of contamination that may have covered the entire coin, but has flaked off during continued circulation. It may have actually protected the coin from circulation damage. It's not possible to tell just what is on the coin without using something like Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). I worked in a Coke lab years ago. (I was a tech in a soft drink quality control lab, but I love using the line above.)

It has every mark, scratch, dent as the DDO. It's possible for that to be true yet not have the error because everything else is spot on correct?
