In my last $1,000 of quarter roll hunting this past week, this is the most bizarre find I had. At first glance, it was just a dirty/damaged coin that took five seconds to go into the discard pile. But when I went to re-roll the discards, I noticed one quarter was distinctly narrower than all the others in the roll I was loading. I took a closer look; it was that dirty/damaged coin!

With that second look, I noticed it has a unique rim that goes 360 degrees around the coin. I cannot see how such a rim was made!?

Next I weighed the coin and it was 4.72 grams. So its perceived thinness appears to be backed up by its low weight. ?

Attached are pictures. Is this just a damaged/dirty coin after all, or is there something else going on with it?

Please review and opine.

This quarter took a bath in acid, which lowered the weight when it preferentially attacked the copper layer (seen as that hollowed out center on the edges).

I agree with acid etched.
Acid attacks the copper before the nickel, that is why some
of the copper core has been eaten away.

Thank you, Spence and JimmyD! An acid bath does indeed explain that bizarre rim and its weight. Now I can say I learned something today!

Some acids eat the copper:

Thank you all for your very good info on this coin and acid-etching in general! It is worth the 25 cents it cost me to put it into a 2x2 as a classic example of an acid-etched clad coin!
