@cl, according to my fancy new Coinoscope app, looks like Aigina, Attica (Ancient Greece). The overall design of your piece is quite similar (see, for example, a link to a ms-shops auction below); however, the body of the turtle is much less distinct with yours. I agree with Spence (I was typing while he was posting). Somewhat similar to a silver stater of Aegina (Greece), 550-530 BC, the first coin shown here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silve...ith_a_turtleHowever, I'm not qualified to give an opinion as to authenticity. Perhaps some greater experts will weigh in here. I would recommend posting the weight and diameter for their benefit. Edited by Seeker55

Ok good to know. I'm very suspicious of this one, but much like @seeker55, really not qualified to render an opinion as to its authenticity. In looking at a bunch of auctions, it looks like an Obol would be about 1 g and 8 mm in diameter, while a Hemidrachma would be about 3 g and 16 mm. All of them have strong features and very high relief compared to yours. Did you pick it up from a reliable dealer or some kid hanging around the fringes of the Souk el-Sagha in Amman?

@Spence I never collect coins unless from reliable sources and after careful investigations. This coins has been within the collection for quite long. I cant actually remember how and when it ended up in the collection. I have not been to Souk al-Sagha before, its the first time to hear they sell coins in there :)

Interesting. It is a much-faked type. But, on the other hand, there is a precedent for a diobol turtle. From Heritage, below.  HA's listing: "SARONIC ISLANDS. Aegina. Ca. 480-457 BC. AR diobol (2.09 gm). Sea turtle with thin collar and row of dots down shell, seen from above / Five-part "Union Jack" incuse. Cf. HGC 6 446 (triobol). Extremely rare or unique, seemingly unrecorded in the major sources! NGC VF 4/5 - 2/5. The weight of 2.09 grams leaves little doubt it is intended as a diobol in the Aeginatic standard; however, while triobols and obols are comparatively well-attested, no diobols are listed in any of the major attribution books or auction catalogs." |

@Spence I am a collector of rare coins since 1984. My family is so into coin collecting, art, literature and heritage since ages. I inherited a lot of passion to coins from them. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Nabatean etc coins are actually not of my areas of expertise but I do collect coins from these eras which I feel rare or unique. I am specialized in the early Arab coinage and I am heavily invested in coins in general. |

OK very interesting @cl. I was in Jordan a couple years ago--it would have been nice to connect with a fellow numismatist when I was there. Hopefully, next time! Also, I'm glad to hear that you are specialized in early Arab coinage--would love to see you post a couple of those when you have a chance.

@Spence Please let me know before you next visit. I will be so pleased to have you in Jordan.
As to the early Arab coinage, such a coinage is so complicated but I will surely share some objects with the community soon.
