Hi All. I was wondering if anyone had an idea about this George V 1918 coin. It has the size and horse of a half sovereign, I believe from my research, but it can't be gold, it has the same colour of the old pennies. I've just inherited my dads coin collection, and I remember this one driving him mad, and I feel like it might do the same with me any help is much appreciated!

Hi Bawillis

I have many pennies, and this is a different size and has a horse design, not the Britannia, which makes me think it must be something else.

What is the weight?

I am thinking that it is the first step of making a fake 1/2 sovereign, the next step being to gold plate it.

Size matches a half sovereign (19.3 mm), as does the St. George device on the reverse, but those were 22 carat gold, and your coin doesn't appear to be gold.

Weight should be 3.99 grams if it's gold.

According to Spink the only half sovereigns issued in 1918 were from the Perth, Australia mint, so if you can see a P on the reverse between the date and the horses hooves that would help.

However, given the color and the poor quality of the edges, I suspect you have a contemporary counterfeit.

Thanks everyone for the information. Unfortunately I don't have the coin with me at the moment so can't weigh it, but by the looks of everything it is a counterfeit. From a larger version of the photo there is no letters above the date. Shame I didn't think about researching it before my old man passed away, he would have been really interested, although maybe a tad disappointed, about it all. He always thought it was something a bit special.

Well, people do collect contemporary counterfeits so there are people who would consider them special!
