Hmm seems to be the wrong size for a dropped letter (or in this case dropped number)--a little too small, but I'm not sure what it is @mrph.

Looks like two old hits that upon years of circulation appears to be an '8.'

Or an 'S'? But it is not off the die as it would be raised more. If it is slight raised, you might want to look closer at it to see if something is still there, like dropped letter. These are often incuse on a coin though not raised. If it is level, then it maybe a stain?

Coincidental surface damage. Sooner or later it looks like a digit.

Do you think maybe it's debris in the the die? The numbers and letters look like they took a fair amount of damage during striking before general wear from age did it's part.

with Coinfrog. I too see the number eight... but it's just random damage. Going through thousands of coins you can find all sort of patterns and shapes. Keep going Mrph12
