Those are all quite nice looking. That thaler is quite unique in its appearance.

I really like the high relief & detail on these older medals. Can anyone tell me how the minting process differed from regular coinage of the time?

trdhrdr007, you have brought up a great question about minting process. I do know that the Bamberg piece (3rd piece) exhibited evidence that it was minted with a 3 piece collar. Unfortunately the edges are obscured in the slab now, but the medal has lettering around the edge. Beyond that, I do not have a clue. On the reverse at 8:00 you can see a line that I suspect was a result of the collar during the minting process, but I am not 100% certain. Anybody else have any knowledge about the minting technology of the time?

I don't have any medals myself but have always admired the older ones that get posted in this part of the forum. Some of them have such high relief they almost appear 3D.

What was the cost of the 'slabbing' please, especially as a percentage of the value of the medals? regards,

The slab fee was around $25 per. This would put the fee as a percentage of total value between 3% and 9%. I can generally justify a slab fee if the coin is $150 or more, but everybody has their own rule of thumb.

Will you ever be able to recoup the fee if you sell? regards.

Tough to say. With medals, the prospective audience is much smaller than coins, and prices are quite a bit more subjective. I do not have the ability to turn to the Krause guide for price ranges. However, I am not in the hobby just for the return on investment, so I understand that taking a loss on something is a distinct possibility - it has happened in the past and I am sure it will appen again. I really do not have a magical formula on slabbing. My decision to send these to NGC was based on the desire to protect the coin/medal, authenticate, properly attribute the coin/medal, and to clearly identify what it for family in the event something happened to me.
