Looks authentic, mint mark in depression and placed properly. Also lacks features of common counterfeits. These are tough to grade because of the reverse die wear, very normal on 14D's. A rush to grade would likely trick someone into VG.....however...

For a Denver issue, the obverse of these are usually well struck and pretty sharp. The obverse is VF-20 maybe 25, it has nice separation between the cheek and jaw, it's very clean with no major hits....in fact, it's surprizingly free of hits. The rims are excellent too.

The reverse is tricker due to die wear and it's evident on this coin. It could technically fall down to VG territory with the hits, but I believe it closer to VF in wear. I can see at least 50% of the lines.

I would pay Fine money for this coin in a heartbeat, it's nice enough to command VF-20 cash IMO and that's my grade. That's a nice 14D!

That is an awesome undergraded cherrypick
$220 is Greysheet ask for VG8 and F12 bid/ask is $330/$360 so that was a good deal

I'm still amazed an experienced dealer missed the separation between the cheek and jaw. That's a fundamental grade check on Lincolns and why I gave it a VF grade. CDN bid is $390 for a VF!

What city is he in? Let me know when he has another 1914D like that cause I'm driving there! LOL The wheats are a super good indicator in general, however most of the Denver issues you just can't do that with. In the early years they were notorious for over-using dies.

I think you got a great deal on this coin, however I'm not as high on it as Thad is.

The obverse is technically VF. I agree there is separation between cheek and jaw and it's hit free. But the amount of overall wear on the obverse bothers me.. If I were to grade the front I'd call it an 18.

The reverse, try as I might I can't find half of the wheat lines. I've looked at this coin on three separate screens (17" laptop, 19" desktop, and 48" LCD TV) and I can't make them out. On the second reverse image I can almost maybe make out "half" of them... but then again that would depend on the definition of half (which has been one of my major gripes about the grading standard). Long story short I'd grade the reverse at a 6.

I'm not real fancy in how I combine my scores, just average them together. Which in my book makes this a 12. Which to me means that this is a solid Fine coin. As such I would have paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 and been extremely happy. The fact that you only paid $220 is awesome.

(I do agree with Thad that it's authentic)

My first instinct was VG-10, but then I took a closer look and saw some definition in the wheat lines. That made me think it was a F-12. However, looking at the lettering on both sides makes me think it's a typical weak strike so common with 14-Ds. I might grade this F-15. I don't think it's into the VF level. A grading service might under-grade it by a lot. It could come back as a VG-8. As an example, I submitted my 1914-D to PCGS and it came back VF-25. I whole-heartedly disagree with this grade that PCGS assigned and intend to resubmit it. If you accept that PCGS calls mine (link below) a VF-25, there's no way this coin could be a VF-20.

. Looks like wear to me. I'd say VG at best.

I also agree with a VG+ grade for this coin.

That's a solid VG10 with a shot at Fine. It's way over Good and you got a great price!
