A Wierd 1983 Lincoln Cent - Larger Size Penny

BigWho1974 New Member United States 16 Posts	Posted 12/08/2019 2:11 pm Hey Guys and Gals, I need your help trying to come up with a reason why this 1983 Lincoln Penny is so odd. My friend found this penny in Trenton NJ. I looked it over and I am trying to find out, if this is an an error coin, or was it struck on a larger press on purpose? From the pictures below, it is most noticeably bigger than a regular Lincoln Cent. It is not made out of steel, we took a magnet, it did not stick. How ever it looks like it is made out of something other than copper zinc? The picture states it weighs 2.5 grams... But considerably a larger coin. Is this made out a different type of metal? What really strikes me odd about this coin is that the size of Lincoln on the front and the obverse are both pressed with a larger design. This is what leads me to believe it was purposely pressed for a larger size coin? Or is this some type of bootleg mule coin? Thoughts? Report this Post to the Staff

Spence Moderator United States 34428 Posts	Posted 12/08/2019 2:30 pm @bw1974, despite finding this coin in New Jersey, it most looks like a so-called Texas Cent to me. To create this, a normal coin is placed between two pieces of leather and then the whole sandwich is hit with a hammer until the coin is slightly larger in diameter (and slightly thinner). I've never done this, but if you took two piece of leather belt and put them on each side of the coin, then put it into a vise and cranked it real tight, you would make the coin flatter and wider. and when you open the leather, the plating falls off the coin because of the expansion of the coin. Sometimes the coin stays round and sometimes it will not be round. But I've heard that is how it is done. Report this Post to the Staff
