Poll Question
If someone were to start a petition to get rid of the dollar bill and only have a dollar coin like most of Europe, Who would sign it?
I will say that they should make it less bulky more like the pound. But if they would do that how many would support it?

Poll Choices
 I would sign the petition
 I wouldn't sign the petition

I would also vote to strike the $2 bill and replace with a coin.

Those aren't as prevalent but I would second that.

Yanking production of the $1 bill will be the only way a $1 coin will succeed.

From a fiscal standpoint it does make sense to replace the dollar bill with a dollar coin. I don't remember the exact numbers(nor where I read it) but the lifespan of a bill is considerably less than a coin. In the long run it even off sets the initial greater cost of making the coin. It would save the government money. Plus, the coin can be melted down and recycled, the bill gets burned when they reach the end of their life spans. I would prefer a coin.

We didn't have any choice in Canada, they minted a dollar coin, took the dollar bill out of circulation, and BOOM! no more dollar bill.

The $1 bill only exists today in the U.S. because of the paper industry's lobbying (its equivalent is already gone from Canada, Australia, Great Britain, the Euro countries, etc.).

The $1 bill will have to go for the $1 coin to achieve widespread use circulation, that's all there is to it!

The $2 bill is already not in 'common' circulation, but a $2 coin would make sense as well....

Right--if it saves money, just do it. Crane Co. can find other contracts.

For my own selfish reasons I'd vote against it. I collect currency as well.
Now, if/when they do they should stop making dollar coins. There are enough now to last in circulation for quite a while if they ever DID reach circulation.

Only getting rid of the paper will achieve that.

I would support it too. There are so many brand new $1, 50C coins stored in bags in Fed's vault. IJ would like to see JFK in circulation.
