A friend says she has a 1982 Denver Mint copper small date penny. I have a friend who can test the copper for approximate age and of course if it's copper. Beyond that I really don't know I guess what's the best way to get it graded don't really feel like shipping a coin that that off. She's coming down for the holidays and she asked if I would help get it graded? Once I get it I will post pictures but any big red flags to look out for?

We will need photos and a weight. 3.1 grams is copper but a lot of people can not tell the difference between LD and SD.

I think we will have to wait to see the pictures before we
can say too much about it. Weighing it will tell you if it is
copper or zinc, no need to have it tested.

to the CCF!

Once you post the pictures you should get plenty of help with the next steps. Make sure the coin is protected and that no one damages it by cleaning it. Tell your friend not to touch the surfaces if possible.

the weight will tell you what you need to know.

3.1 grams for copper, 2.5g for the common zinc version.

As John1 said, there are a lot of people who cannot identify the small date from the large date. Without experience, you really have to see them side my side. Please share your photographs here, enlarging clearly the date will help us. If it is indeed the small date copper from the Denver mint, weighing 3.1 grams, well then you will have something special. We wish you best of luck. We are here to help.
