Thanks Chase007. I thought that's what it might be.

@HM, can you please do me a favor and try to depress this area with a wooden toothpick? For sure it might be a die chip, but it instead might be the underlying zinc starting to deteriorate and push up on the copper plating.

That was my thought as well. Wondered why it looked so perfectly shaped on the area. You might see a gray outline on the edge of the digit?

@Spence & coop- I tried to press down on it with the toothpick but no change. I also tried pressing from the top and the bottom to see if it would flake off but no change. It seems solid. I'm pretty sure some of these have a DDO with spread on that part of the 8 right? Would that have anything to do with it? Here's another picture after using the toothpick.

If it were a DDO, then all the devices would look like that on that area. It might be a die chip. But they are not as normal looking. (Chips tend to look more like chewed gum) If it were a chip off a hub, that device would be missing. Might have to have Mike Diamond chime in this one? Sent a message to him already.

Very nice last image. I know chips can happen at any time but this looks to be an early die state coin which don't usually show signs of chips. There's minimal die wear, no clash marks and no die scratches from polishing it to smithereens. Fairly strong devices with no weakness or die flow lines.
Almost looks like a piece of something may have been depressed into the die on the last hubbing creating an extra void when it fell out.

I would have to agree with those who've identified the defect as a die chip. Not all die chips are oval or subcircular in shape. Some are quite elongate. I've seen long, thin die chips hugging the outer side of the eagle's wing on Washington quarters.

I am glad it is just a die chip and not a major find, because I have seen them three or four times roll searching and maybe kept one. John1
