First quick intro since I'm new here. From the big ATL, native even. My hobbies vary widely and never really was into coins. That is until my oldest son got into it and seems to retain most everything he reads. Fast forward a year and I figured, it's Christmas time and I've some time off work as he does from college. Let me help him fill his books by roll hunting. From local banks we have sifted through the following: 1 box each of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters - few wheat pennies a cool gold coated quarter and pretty much nothing else special. No silver. Then we hit the bank for half dollars. We done 3 1/2 boxes (all we could find ) in three days. While no silver I did find two 2015 half's which I understand were only issued to collectors. These worthy to get graded? I can post pics later if needed. Main item is I found this awesome 2000 half that appears to be partially struck. Across the top it reads "IBERT" as the L and the Y are completely missing. Scoping it under 40x I faintly see the top of the L nothing more. Below it reads "GOD WE TRU" the IN is completely missing and the T at the end, for trust the US has barely the first 1/4 of the top of these letters even semi visible. Figuring it was wear I checked the edges of the coin figuring they'd be equally flat. They are not, nice ridge all the way around the face of the coin. Anyone seen this before? worth sending off for grading? Ideas on value? Hopefully these pics help out.

Just partially Grease Filled Die. Keep as an example but not filled enough to have any real extra value. The 2015 Half's would come from one of the Proof/Mint Sets.

Well that's disappointing. Surely would think this was a rare error. I'll recheck the coin but wear seems unlikely to make these missing. Does my appear like other wear patterns I've been checking out to compare what to look for and compare to grade scales

Scorpius, these Grease Filled Die coins, or "greasers" as some call them, are pretty common. Others can weigh in.....but we probably see dozens of Grease Filled Die coins in the forum weekly.

Scorpius- Nobody said the letters are missing from wear. It was caused by a partially Grease Filled Die. This is when grease or some other substance gets into the cavities of the die and not allowing the metal to flow in when the coin is struck thus making these letters appear missing. It is quit common and no premium unless it is severe.

And to answer the question about the 2015 half dollars, they are almost certainly not worth grading. Yes they were not made for circulation, but enough of them were made for mint sers and to sell to collectors in bags and rolls that they are only worth a couple dollars. They would have to grade VERY high to be worth more than the cost to have them graded (figure $25 to $45 dollars each) If they come ack MS-68 you win, if they come back MS-67 you lose BIG TIME. The consider this. Since these were not made for circulation the way they got there was probably form someone who bought the bags/rolls and then cherrypicked them looking for those MS-68's. And anything they thought wouldn't cut it they just dumped at the bank. So what you have are someone elses grading rejects.

Is there a good site for me to find visuals of errors and what to look for? Right now I'm hung up on the 1/2 dollars hoping for silver but three boxes tells me it's not likely going to occur often. Anything else worth hunting also links to what to look for? Thanks for all the feedback, thought I had a winner, in my 50 years I've never come across one missing letters without it being severely hammered on or worn.

http://www.error-ref.com/ is a good site to learn about errors, and usually there are pictures with the entries. Variety Vista as mentioned by GF is a good reference for many doubled die and RPM varieties (and a few other things). Similarly, you can check against Wexler's site: doubleddie.com. Specifically for cents, you might check http://coppercoins.com/advsearch.php as well. And of course, this forum is a great place to learn as many people post all sorts of questions. Hope that is useful and welcome to the forum.
