Hi I'm brand new to collecting coins. I don't expect to make a lot of money or any money, but I am having loads of fun looking at the details and the differences especially with the penny.

I have a 1978 P Lincoln Memorial penny that looks to have extra thickness on the date, the motto, and Liberty. I've done some research and also have a 1978 P penny for comparison (which I've uploaded - the penny on the bottom).I've also uploaded the reverse of the penny I'm asking about.

Again, brand new at this so I'm just asking :)

Hi Kae, to the forum.

If you're able to provide close up pictures of the areas in question, that will probably allow us to make a more certain judgment. As for now, I will mention that I do see the extra thickness *relative* to the cent below, however, I suspect that actually the coin below is showing thinner than normal devices rather than the coin above showing thicker than normal devices. When a die is polished to remove imperfections, it can reduce the thickness of the devices. So ultimately I think you've got two "normal", i.e. non-variety and non-error, coins here, but one has stronger features from not having seen as much wear to the die that struck it.

Hope that helps and we'll see if anyone can see something else here as I'm not 100% certain.

Thanks so much for your reply, Oijogja. I attached two more pictures I had taken before. They're not the best...still working on that , but they should help.

Thanks for the welcome!

I can't tell if it's glare or doubling in the second photo, but I am leaning towards glare because I basically see normal coins I'm afraid. Keep looking and asking questions!
and

That looks like a normal coin. The devices were a bit larger that year:
