I'll say 63 on the first and AU details (cleaned) on the second.

63/64 on the first one....still lots of eye appeal!
The second one has problems. Looks like it has been dipped to death to try and remove the heavy toning and carbon spots. It has not worked out too well and the coin now has dead lustre.

So did I really get taken on both these coins which came from different dealers- both with 100% ratings? Seems like better coin is not even close to a 66 and the ANAC holder is way off as well and no one sees a double reverse? yikes. Do you think the ANAC Stone Mountain was completely miss-graded or worse- tampered with? Do the slab holders look off? I paid about $215 for the NGC and about $75 for the ANAC. thanks all

On the first, I'd say mint state and the second EF. I recently acquired Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins by Anthony Swaitek and Walter Breen. Not quite half way through and I'm learning that most of the commemoratives are notoriously weak strikes. According to the authors, look for mint like luster in what appears to be wear areas. The first exhibits these diagnostics, the second not so much. As for a value, keep in mind that these were circulated and overly cleaned by the public making high grades tougher to find and expensive above MS63. The early commemoratives make for a great long term investment. Hope that helps.

To add why an ef on the ANACS, look at the rim near the horse's hind quarter and "Of America" on the reverse. Too smooth.

Remember that we are giving grading OPINIONS of coins based on PICTURES of coins. We do not have the luxury of having the coins in hand.
The coins might grade higher or lower (or the same) on any given day.
The first coin I thought was 64....but was graded 66 by NGC. I was off by two points. I'm ok with that.
The 2nd coin graded 62 which Is in line with a dead luster, over dipped half. It could just have easily have body bagged or detail graded.
I don't think you got "taken" unless you paid stupid money for them. (I do not have a pricing sheet handy)

Does anyone see the double die on the reverse on the ANAC coin? I don't see a doubling. Thanks all and your input is very helpful.

If you like the coins, that's what matters. Not everyone will share your opinions.

As far as the doubling goes I "think" I can see it in some of the letters of "Dollar" and "America". I do not know what the actual pickup points are though.

Quote: So did I really get taken on both these coins...... I bought some Texas Centennial Half Dollar sets a few months ago. I paid almost 900$ for a set of 38's in PCGS 65 and a set of 36's for almost 400$ in PCGS 65. Some people would say I got "taken". On the other hand some people would say I "got a good deal". Bottom line is I think I did "ok" and I like the coins! That's what counts! YOU are the only person who has to be satisfied.

The first one is fine, pictures can be hard to grade MS from. The second one looks accurate but not the prettiest, I would look for more eye appeal on examples unless that was pretty close to melt. Quote: To add why an ef on the ANACS, look at the rim near the horse's hind quarter and "Of America" on the reverse. Too smooth. And look at the rest of the design, the horses heads, human heads, jackets hair etc, there's to much detail there and the revers for a single spot to have worn out as much as the horses backside would have had too. Definitely wasn't a good strike though
