Quite right. Here are a couple which were offered for sale at coin auctions in Switzerland in 2006; one sold for around US$130, the other one went unsold.

Were there different varieties made for this date? I see quite a few differences between the two.

No, just the usual variation between hand-carved dies you often find in mediaeval and early modern coins. I'd assume that nobody collects "die varieties" for these; if they did, virtually every surviving coin would be it's own variety.

I should also add that I just noticed that the "couple of coins" in the link I gave above are actually one and the same coin, offered for sale on two separate occasions.

Thanks for that Sap. I wasn't even thinking along the lines of the dies being hand carved. Guess that would explain the difference. So I'm guessing that you can't rule a coin counterfeit just by the differences like you can on the modern stuff. One thing that is puzzling me with the pic by the original poster. All the info is here. It looks like the same coin. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...=1968&pos=11

Quite right; the URL for the OP's pic is indeed from the FORVM site. I can only assume this is the pic the OP referred to when he said he'd "seen the image" on the web.

Damond, if we can see a pic of your actual coin, we might be able to help you more with regards to price, etc.
