HAPPY NEW YEAR GOOD PEOPLE!!
I have a question of the rarity and value of this dime below that I found today. It is a 2017-P dime with feeder fingers on the reverse on both sides of the torch shaft and a possible DD on "ONE". Please help me with this because I did some looking into this variety but only found one video from 2/2/19 on YouTube with Blueridge talking about the "Feeder Fingers" on a 2018-P. I searched all over and found nothing on a 2017-P anywhere which gives me the idea that this may be a rare coin.
Please verify that this is or isn't a Feeder Finger error and if so, whats the rarity and projected value? Also is ONE doubled?
My understanding is that feeder finger die scrapes are unique to the anvil die. By 2017, the mint had completed its conversion to the Schuler Press and the Reverse was the hammer die.
This leads me to think these are die polishing lines and not feeder finger scrapes.
With the Schuler Press, feeder finger die scrapes can happen on either die and even on both at the same time. Ken Potter says he wrote an article about that in Numismatic News sometime around 2000
Not adding a value to a coin. Just a die event that happen. People save them, but I see no real premium for them. I used to think that the main purpose of polishing a die was to remove die clashes, but probably the most damage to the designs on the dies, is the polishing to remove Feeder Finger Damage.
Since the Mint uses Dial Presses so much in recent years it is impossible to say any of this is from a feeder "finger" - "feeder mechanism" is the proper term here.
