Guys I'm looking for help on this. I'm new to collecting. I got a large number of Wheat pennies from a friend who's grandfather had them stored in oil cans from when he owned a shop in the 70s. Searching through them I spied this and it doesn't look right to me....what are your thoughts?

Looks like a good dose of Die Deterioration. Possible die crack/chips (worn a bit) in the left wheat stalk. Let's see what others weigh-in with.

In 1955 they struck almost 900 Million of the P,D & S pennies
For comparison in 1955 they only struck about 30 Million quarters
Back then they used the dies a lot longer on the pennies which causes a lot weak and flattened strikes.

Agree, just Die Deterioration here. Very common for this date.

Extreme die wear is showing on these 1950's Wheat cent dies. Very common to find during these years. People used to sell these, but they are not doubled die. They called them "Poor mans doubled dies." So if you paid a premium for these and all you collected were these that you bought for a premium. Guess what? You would be the "Poor man".

I purchased about 5-6000 wheat pennies, through the memorials late 60s from my friend...I had him take them to a dealer and told him that I would match the dealers price for them. So I got them all for 60 dollars US. At least 1/4 are from the 40s with alot from the 20s 30 and 50s. Alot of mint state 40s also. So I cant complain about the price.
