I am referencing a post from Greott71 on 10/01/2015 about his 1997 D Nickel. I understand that Mint Marks were no longer punched by hand after 1990. This was the discussion back in 2015. I am having a hard time reconciling this fact with the nickel post of 2015 and the nickel that I have of the same year and mint as greott71. Please convince me that this is Die Deterioration or Machine Doubling. It is definitely confusing to me.

Ok, just one question: "What direction do you see the die flow lines flowing on the nickel?" They are flowing SE. So note the distortion of the inside of the mint mark is flowing in the same direction, right though the mintmark. Also not that the top of the mintmark loop is also being distorted in the same exact direction. So it is an issue with die wear that is affecting the mintmark. When the die was fresh it was totally normal. As the die aged, it altered that area on the mintmark. Not a RPM/or doubled die (if this was actually die doubling it would have been from a doubled die, but the rest of the coin is not showing a doubled die). This is just an aging die issue.

COOP, I am an old man and absolutely mean no disrespect and understand your statements. I have spent a long life as a mathematician and engineer and have enjoyed numismatics for the better part of my 75 years. The flow lines are radiating from the center of the coin in 180 degrees. I can't take extreme fine detail photos, but I assure you that every other device on the obverse of this coin are from a strong strike and are clear with no signs of MD or deterioration. It of course shows circulation use, but even that is not extreme. I'm just saying that I have never seen Die Deterioration that caused a problem with only the mint mark and all other devices remain strong. The mint workers did not place the original mint mark on the die, but were they allowed to do any maintenance to the dies? Two coins that show the same mint mark damage simply causes me to wonder.

COOP, I understand and appreciate your time here regarding this coin. I do have one last observation. looking at the bottom right photo; if all you cold see was the mint mark and you had no date information, and saw the split serif what would your first thought be? Thanks for your comments and education efforts. Randy
