I found this strange nickel with few scratches. I at first thought it was torched, but there are no rough areas or damage. Then I looked at the edge, it is entirely copper color. Is this a type of error, or was it torched and cleaned?

It is definitely NOT a mint error. Others might know the precise cause of the damage.

Perhaps some type of acid spilled on it, eating away some nickel plating? If that's the case, how did it get the near perfect crescent shape on the reverse?

This coin was not originally plated. It seems to have been stained by some unknown substance.
