France 1693, ecu, Louis XIV, Lille (W).  From the 2nd restrike, performed 1693-99. It is struck on a coin from the 1st restrike (performed 1690-93), with traces of that coin visible on both sides. In 1693 the Nine Years' War was at its 5th year, with France fighting the League of Augsburg, a massive alliance including among others the Holy Roman Empire, Dutch Republic, England, and Spain. The cost of the war put a heavy toll on the French finances, and one way to extract more money out of the country was by mandatory reformations of gold and silver coins. A reformation replaced old coins with new of the same size, but with the new ones revalued at a higher value than the old ones, thus allowing the state to keep the difference. To keep costs down, reformations were primarily done by restriking the old coins with a new design (often leaving traces of the old coin visible). For the 2nd restrike, ecus were brought to the mints where they were valued at 63 sols. The restruck ecus (which were used to pay for the old ecus) were valued at 68 sols. A neat and well needed profit of 5 sols per ecu for the treasury. |

Beautiful! 1693 Bishopric of Breslau (today Wroclaw, Poland) 15 Kreuzer. Interesting that coins were being minted under two different authorities in the same city in the 1690s: @spence's 1694 coin is Kingdom of Bohemia /Silesian Royal Mint at Breslau and bears the portrait of Leopold who served simultaneously as King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, and mine is Kingdom of Bohemia / Prince Bishopric of Breslau, with a portrait of Franz Ludwig, Bishop of Breslau. A neat historical tidbit - the College of William and Mary in Virginia, the second-oldest university in the United States (behind Harvard), was established in 1693 under a grant from William and Mary of England.

And nice to see this decade so rich in contributions! I am going to continue @paralyse's German parade with this 1692 4 pfennig coin of Munster. I got inspired by some of @spence and pepactonius' earlier posts to look for a Munster coin to fill one of my gaps in the 1690s (still the seller's photo).  Edited by tdziemia

Looks like you picked up a real beaut @tdz. Really nice color on that one! Here is a 4 Pfennig from the German Free City of Hildesheim that is dated 1692 AD:   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
