How Far Back Can We Go? Sixth Edition! Ended At 1380 Waiting On 1379

I OPPOSE this motion, it is obvious we have reached a fork in the road and will be waiting until the cows come home for this mythological coin from 1486.

It is getting stupid and pointless. I suggest the immediate and absolute shut down of this and any earlier editions still open and we start the new contest in May.

Some of the newer members may want to show off their treasures. I think we should also have an American and Canadian edition and a Rest of the World one, to eliminate the extremely high number of American coins clogging the first 200 years.

Patience is a virtue, but this is crazy, the last coin posted was in the Jurassic epoch!

Seriously the late 15th century was the time, where adding an Anno Domini date on a coin was like cutting edge in modern coin design. Medieval people just did not have an obsession with years beyond the agricultural year and the times of the day. Clock and time keeping technology was basic and based on the sun and ancient almanacs and stuff like sundials, candles and other basic things.

The late 15th century was the Renaissance in Italy, but not really until the 16th century did the Renaisaance hit the rest of Europe. Adding AD dates to a coin was a Renaissance thang, now we are bordering into the Medieval era which was just too primitive, everything was stylised, try and find a proper map or a street scene before the 1500s (Properly before then), it does not exist. You can easily find a map of some German or Italian city dated say 1522, but you won't find one saying "A Plan of Bologna in the year 1254".

Same with coins, I know you have Roman numeral dates as far back as like 1200 something, but I think its about 1460 you see numbers and they had that knot shaped 4 until the late 1480s. Only in the 1500s do you see dates you can read.

I remember being in Salzburg at the castle and nearly flipping out as Maximilian the emperor carved the date everywhere and there were heaps of 1500s and 1501s and finally I saw a sundial dated 1499, even better was an old chapel dated 1494 (Although I suspect this was carved well after 1494).

If anything, it was the Arabs who had an edge on dating their coins in AH and Jewish people in AM, although there were not too many Jewish states between AD70 and AD1948! I have seen Arab coins with dates on them like AH 30!

Seriously finding an AD date on a mid 15th century coin is like finding a reference to Covid 19 in 2017!

IIRC just Spence's coins alone can get from 1485 to somewhere well into the 1460s by now. There might be one or two more gaps that are also filled up by still-active members.

Between all of those we should have no more roadblocks until 1460, where this edition would catch up with the 5th, and the 7th could finally open.

I do agree that we probably need more concurrent editions, but there's never been any consensus on how to convince jbuck to do that, so for now we're stuck at just one new edition every two years (or so).

The majority of his reign was in 1486, I say we should allow it. However, I will leave it to the consensus of the group. We can make a ruling when it comes in. At the very least it gives us something to look at!
