A special year in New Zealand. First the Centennial Half Crown - designed by local Stamp designer - Leonard Cornwall Mitchell and adpated to coinage by Percy Metcalfe.   The coin shows a Maori maiden arms outstretched over a Maori village scene of 1840 and a modern city scene. The logo of the 1940 Centennial Exhibition is also shown. Despite WW2 it was planned in 1938/39 and went ahead from Nov 1939 to Apr 1940 at Rongotai Wellington. In mid 1940 the buildings at the exhibition were demolished and Wellington airport was built there in 1959. The coin had only 100,800 issued and most disappeared as souvenirs, unlike other Half crowns avg condition is VF. This one is aEF with lots of lustre - there is a lot of wear on George. A set of 12 postage stamps was also issued and there were no standard design Hlafcrowns dated 1940. There will not be another half crown until 1937. Edited by Princetane

1940 was also the first year of our Bronze coinage. Again these coins were designed by Leonard C Mitchell and his adversary James Berry also offered designs (Berry got to design the 1953 crown and 1967 coins).   The coins showed a Hei Tiki (Maori neck ornament) and a Tui bird in a Kowhai Tree. The Tui is known for its distinctive call around Dawn and Dusk and also called the Parson bird as it called Maori converts to church 200 years ago. These coins replaced the Britannia and Australian pennies, and had been planned in 1933, but Depression era constraints delayed it and it was thought along with the Half Crown, that they would make wonderful 1940 commems. The 1940 dated coins actually arrived here in December 1939 and these examples are quite worn (Fine as opposed to VF for the 1d and almost VF for ½d) and I will upgrade them eventually, as 5 million pennies and 3.4 million halfpennies issued for a population of 1.5 million. So that means I should be able to pick up a pair of EF coins for about $10 each.  Edited by Princetane

The rest of 1940's coins included   All the coins were issued, but when I bought my collections, the Florins were missing many coins and the lockdown has stopped me buying one in time. The shilling is another cleaned near Fine one and the 6d is VG with the 3d again close to fine. Numbers of 3d coins except 1935 and 1950 were quite high and so Fine examples are easy and cheap to get. - 2 million 3d's in 1940. The 6d and 1/- had modest numbers of 500k (Shilling) and 800k (6d) issued. As we go back to 1939, only 2 coins were issued and none for NZ at all in 1938. |

1940 United Kingdom coin set:  British coins didn't change during WW2. This was not the case in Europe. This 1940 Belgian franc was the last of its type - it was to be replaced by a zinc coin under the Nazi occupation:  |

Speaking of changing coins This Norwegian 10 Ore made out of cupronickel remained intact despite Nazis in Norway   This tiny coin was made between the 1920s and 1952 At 14mm and 1.06gms it may be one of my smallest out of a non precious metal. |

In 1940 Fiji released its rarest Half penny   With just 24k pieces issued, it is quite scarce. My coin is a nice EF one, sadly verdigris on the obverse ruins it a bit. Halfpennies were very fiddly and small compared to Pennies and they were phased out after 1954. |
