Well the pickins were slim for hammered coins at the show up in Manchester, NH this weekend. Many of the dealers I hoped to see didn't show up. I hardly saw anything before 1800. So I adjusted my expectations and went over to a dealer from Pennsylvania who had large stacks of three ring binders full of world coins. Most seemed to be priced without regard to condition. He told me that his prices started at 1/2 off the marked price with some further discounts possible. So I started looking for some nice Queen Victoria coins from Britain and the British Empire. I ended up with seven Victorias that were marked $188 total. He charged me $65 for the bunch. (I didn't haggle.) NumisMattyUK and malissadawn got me started collecting British copper pennies. Here are two that I added to the collection this weekend.

Nice - Why do you think there was little traffic at the event? Do you relate this to the economy?

Nice price for the whole group! That Victoria bust looks very nice even with some wear. The 1864 has me curious...is that a die mark between the 8 and 6 in the date? I know some of these are rather scarce, but I forget which ones.

Very nice coins! I must admit that I enjoy British bronzes of this period as well. The luster on that 1894 is great. What else did you pick up?

The show was held at a more upscale hotel than it was last year - probably the rooms cost more and maybe the dealer tables cost more as well. In previous years many dealers probably took their wives along to leaf peep. People are cutting back and airfares are up, so maybe they decided not to spend the money. Quote:

I don't see any raised features between the 8 and the 6. There may be a small piece of lint.

t360, Thanks for posting that detail! It was a hunch; I read the 1863 "die 3" is a rare one to look for...

G'day, sounds like a fun weekend. I collect Victoria's as well: I'm focussing on 1887 for the moment.

Based on the description of obverse types and mint marks on the 1887 1/4 rupee by Dr. B. Jinadatha, this coin is Obverse C : 1. Three sections in front dress panel 2. Last section has single flower to the left 3. In dress at the bottom of the bust 'V' mark in Culcutta mint coins 4. 'V' is absent in Bombay mint coins I can see an incuse 'V' in directly below the flower in Dr. Jinadatha's example of an obverse C coin. However I don't see either an incuse 'V' or a raised 'V' on my coin. Therefore I conclude that my coin is from the Bombay mint. Let me know if you concur or I have missed something.

Actually, the mint mark to which I am referring appears on teh reverse of the coin inside the elaborate flower beneath the date. In fact, I am now looking at my 1887 1/4 Rupee, and I see an incuse "C."

Very nice victorias! That 1845 EIC is really great looking. Here is a pic of my 1887C 1/4 Rupee (I hope this pic is clear enough): Image: IndiaBritishonefourthrupee1887Cobv.jpg29.66 KB Notice how at the base of the inner part of the Flower there is a very discernible "C." This is the incuse variety. You may have the raised version and the mint mark has worn off or was not well struck.

Thanks Archraz! On the top flower (above the date) on my 1887 1/4 rupee, there is a raised 'B' mint mark: and, as expected, no mark on the bottom flower below the date:
