Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and to the world of numismatics. The reason for posting is because during excavating an area in my garden I found a few US coins. It is very strange as I live in Australia and the suburb I live in was bushland 30 years ago. Please forgive me, as before I knew what I potentially had I did clean the coins..!! I now know after researching this is potentially the last thing you should do.. I now know better and will NEVER clean a coin again..!! However I wanted to know peoples opinions on whether they are genuine or fake? I have found the following 4 coins (photos attached): 1857 Flying Eagle 1 cent 1869 Indian Head 1 cent 1877 Indian Head 1 cent 1877 Indian Head 1 cent Thank you in advance, and I appreciate any assistance which will guide me as to whether to continue searching the area in detail. Once again I apologise for the cleaning...!

Those dates on the 1877s don't look right to me and neither does the 1869.

Looking at a real one, this one is close. In the real one I was comparing, the differences I see are minor. The bust should be pointy. The spaces in the 8 are bigger UNITED is closer together (less gap between the letters) Sevens are thinner Nose should be more up pointed N in ONE should be weak at the bottom. The N is the biggest issue for me, the rest that could be from wear. These are coins if they were mine I would get a 2nd opinion, even cleaned the IHC are worth a few hundred USD if genuine.

Both -77's are fakes and the -69 is likely genuine, questionable on the FEC.

I just checked and I found a picture of a fake 1869 and your dates look alike. Sorry based on this, I think both the 1877 and 1869 are counterfeit.

I agree with GrapeCollects. There's no doubt that the 2 1877s are fake, but the 1869 looks good. Can we get some more pics? to CCF!

to CCF. I know those 7's are from typical fat 7 Chinese counterfeit dies. I think it's strange to find a 69 in the same place as that would be an important date too. Cleaning these didn't hurt you much. Don't clean coins.

The 1857 has the broken wheat stalk typical of fake 1857's and the date location is wrong for the 1869/9.

One thing you should try is seeing if in your area you can purchase something called Acetone. Usually found in paint supply stores. Use this to clean any coins. It will not harm any of the coins metal. Only eat up most of the dirt. And as to your finding those. Apparently someone just knew they were not real and threw them away.
