Hello,

What is the difference between a magnifying glass and a loupe? Can a loupe be used to look at Proof Sets? Do loupes come in different sizes?

Thanks,
Rich

A loupe is a type of magnifier, but not all magnifiers are loupes.
loupe-Loupe
magnifier-Loupe

You can get magnifiers and loupes in just about any power from 2x to 20x

Loupes are more convenient to carry around verses a magnifying glass. I use a Peer 10x -TRIPLET which is also used by geologists in the field if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway it was purchased at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (Geology Dept.) a few years ago. Comes in a tough little compact leather pouch as well.

Take Care

what size loupe would people recommend? I currently have a magnifier (don't know the power and don't know how to find it's power)but when it comes to seeing the mintmark...with what I have, it's difficult. and reading anything the size of the mintmark or smaller on the Presidential dollar is impossible.

along, with size what else should I consider, such as brand or whatever?

An excellent loupe for the price is a GEMORO brand. They are widely used in gemology and Zoology. They make an excellent 10X , 21mm ( wide view) for general do it all. Actually depending on your interests you might like a 20X loupe for small details like mintmark variations, or a 3-5X loupe to better judge grading. Too high magnification makes a MS64 coin look like EF sometimes. B&L, Nikon, and Ziess can be in the 70-100 range, the Gemoro is usually in the 15-25 dollar range. usually found in jewelry or rockhound sites/

Ideal magnification would be 7x to 10x. The size of the lens itself is a matter of personal choice, but I like to see as much of the coin as possible.
