Can anyone enlighten me regarding this item. I dug it up in the UK in the 1970's and have often wondered what it could be. It seems to be hammered and is not magnetic. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Those markings are irregular, which makes me think it is a homemade design of some sort. If so, it could mean anything or nothing.

Weight and diameter might help to identify the host coin.

My guess is that someone just took punches to a very worn 1/2 penny or 1 penny.

Those do seem to be swords and hearts as countermarks, which is not something that I have seen before. Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Heya! This is a love token - likely on a copper 1/2 penny of either Charles II or one of the early Georges. Although small silver change became the preferred canvas for such productions, I've handled quite a few early 18th century examples on coppers.
