It's been a while since I posted an entry. Sharing some of the key parts of my research findings from my exhibit at the 2018 ANA World's Fair of Money. To make a long story short, my research has identified six U.S. Government Agencies that utilized the U.S. Mint as a make-to-order manufacturer of "special medals". The term "special medals" is a U.S. Mint term. Based on my research it was due to the fact that U.S. Government Agencies used a "special service" to inquire/place a "special order" of "special medals". The U.S. Mint used a "special process" to react to the inquiry, develop a design, seek approval of the design, manufacture, deliver, and receive payment. Research paper organized, formed, and named the U.S. Government Agencies medals (with the exception of the Assay Commission medals). New category of U.S. Mint medals to collect called "special Government medals (sGm)". Note the Four Honor Types in the right columns. New category of U.S. Mint medal collecting. Preliminary research findings were copyrighted. Cover of preliminary research findings paper. Introduction to preliminary research findings paper. ANA Exhibit Award

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this with us. Looks like you've found a fun idea for sets.
How common are these items? Difficult to assemble a fairly matched set?

New Research Find... First posted at my ANA blog. It's documented in an enacted US law that authorizes departments (aka agencies of the US Government) to incur expenses to issue an honorary award to employees of the US Government. The redaction is to prevent from stealing my thunder with the exact law as I'm still researching it. My research now has the evidence from the US Government agency perspective (already have the evidence from the US Mint perspective). Distinguished Sampling Exceptional Sampling Other samplings to follow...

Sharing my research find on the Department of the Interior Commendable Service Award. 1. First convocation of the Commendable Service Award (bronze) was April 28, 1948. (It will be 72 years this April since the first convocation.) 2. First convocation issue was 92 bronze medals. (The number of medals (gold, silver, and bronze) of the first convocation are now known.) 3. Recipients of the bronze medal confirmed on the medal and documentation. It was fun unfolding the history of this medal in my collection.

Updated post I placed in another thread. This is a Department of Treasury Meritorious Service Award designed by John Ray Sinnock (8th Chief Engraver of the US Mint and designer of the Roosevelt dime, Franklin half dollar, and numerous other U.S. Mint items) and Adam Pietz (designer of the Iowa Centennial half dollar and numerous other U.S. Mint items). Both of their hallmarks can be seen on the obverse at the bottom left or right of the stairs. The Department of the Treasury first awarded these medals in 1949. As you can see from my documentation research find, these medals are rarely awarded. The medal shown resides in my collection.
