Is there any rational reason why the asking price on this ought to be $120K?

You answered your own question. They want offers. ebay forces you to put in a BIN with BO so you put in a ridiculous one and collect offers.

It also attracts attention to the coin as it did with you. I'm sure the seller realises he won't get anywhere near that price.

No doubt, but a 1909 in straight AU50 BN currently "books" at around $12. Why go to such lengths to promote this specimen? And what would prompt having an impaired example certified in the first place?
