Hello all, I'm a newbie, so I hope my post is within prescribed guidelines. I've had this dime for a while, and couldn't imagine what might impact it with such force as to crack it on one side yet leave the other side undamaged. Then after a search using just the right words I came across the term "die crack" and of course that makes much more sense. This 2006 dime has a few anomalies: 1. The prominent circular 'crack' begins (going counterclockwise) at the edge between the L and I in LIBERTY, then splits, with the most conspicuous path continuing through Roosevelt's upper lip and cheekbone upward following the hairline to meet the edge again, just past the Y in LIBERTY. 2. The 6 in 2006 is only partially visible. I know nothing about coins other than how to spend them, but this doesn't seem to be from wear, judging by the rest of the coin. 3. The W in IN GOD WE TRUST is likewise only partially visible. I probably won't spend it since its an interesting conversation piece, but I admit a little curiosity as to the impact of the die crack on its value. Now that I know that die crack errors are a thing, I think I'm more intrigued by the anomalies in the date and motto. Anyone have any ideas to offer?   |

Thanks to everyone for the great comments and information. I'm just realizing how much there is to learn. John1, I appreciate the ebay link, just can't believe my eyes. So, I guess I won't be putting this one into the parking meter ;) Spence, I spent some time looking at the pages from Cuds on Coins - thanks! I see the example similar to mine; it looks almost identical - perhaps the crack toward the nose may be more pronounced on the one I have (?), or maybe its just a diff in photo quality. I'd taken some photos with the flash that make it clearer, but other features are less clear (posting below). Going to have to spend more time with this on the weekend to better understand the differences between shattered and cracked dies, split versus bisecting, etc. So is the strangeness at the bottom somehow the result of the shattered die, or is this something else or maybe just normal wear from circulation?  |
