I took a look through my 1974's and I know that there is a Large Date and a Small Date for the 1974, which I had previously divided and when I was looking at all of the 1974 Large Dates I came across this one, the "G" in "God We Trust" is a lot thicker than a normal large date, most of the large dates had fairly thick lettering but this one had even thicker so I did a quick comparison and this is what I came up with.

I was hoping to get some opinions, I'm fairly certain there is Machine Doubling in "RUST" but the devices are still fairly thick and I've seen a DDO that looked similar so I'm not 100% sure.

Although it may not look like it, all photos were taken from the same distance as well while I did my comparison.

Definitely MD on TRUST.

I believe that coin is an very early die state with fully formed letters while the coin your comparison coin is mid die state with slight wear and thinning to the outer edge of the lettering closest to the rim. This makes the first coin look thicker than the second.

This extra thickness is too minor to definitively be a doubled die, other factors such as wear or abrasion can cause this slight difference in thickness.

Also, the lack of split serifs also leads me to believe this is not a doubled die. Many of the late 1970s, minor DDOs still show split serifs despite there being only slight extra thickness. The 1978 DDOs are a good example of this. I have 1978 WDDO-001 and a slight notch on the bottom of the R in TRUST is visible.

Thank you for the reply Tanman2001, the lack of split serifs is what had me thinking MD as well, the only difference between this coin and a normal large date is the G and I figured if it were truly doubled there would be more than that. Much appreciated for the information!

More food for thought listed for the Denver mint. Not sure if the other mints show the same. Thanks, Doug.

Type 1 large date. FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY: Light to moderate extra thickness can be seen on the date, LIBERTY and the motto. All Type 1 dies will show this extra thickness to some degree or another.

Keep in mind that if an obverse die was polished it would also make the devices thinner looking than a non polished die. So the devices could be altered on the die either on the large or small date. 1962 proof over polished dies that reduced the overall size of the date devices: IE

Note how the polishing made the devices thinner?

Here is an enlargement on a DDO on a 1962 cent:
1974-Lincoln-Cent,-Possible-DDO?
1974-Lincoln-Cent,-Possible-DDO?
1974-Lincoln-Cent,-Possible-DDO?

So the devices on the fresh die are the differences:

Note on the hair on the 1974 cents to see there is a difference on that area?
