Hi all

Does anyone here know anything about a 1943 Bombay penny with the wide denticles and the " I " under the King's head ? I realise that these aren't all that scarce.

I have one which is upset at 10.15 - 10.30. to the kangaroo horizontal in Ch UNC/CH UNC +.

Thanks in advance for any information

Could you shoot us a photograph, in normal orientation, obverse and reverse and as sharp as you can make it?

You will have a much better shot of receiving assistance if you can.
Good luck.

I think upsets are more common with predecimal coins but I think big upsets are still pretty scarce.

thanks Mr T

The 1943 Bombay penny with the " 1 " under the King's head is still relatively easy to get in genuine aEF/EF condition, but to try to get one now in true CH UNC/ Ch UNC + is difficult. I was having a look at some of my 1942 Bombay pennies a week or so ago ( yes, luckily, I have a few of these without the " 1 " under the head some in UNC/UNC+ ) and then looked at my 1943 Bombay pennies. While turning one over, I noticed something wasn't quite right. This very nice 1943 Bombay penny - wide denticles - is an upset one. I spent a few hours trying to reseach this 1943 Bombay penny variety online, and couldn't find anything about it.

So that's why I decided to ask the forum members for any of their welcomed thoughts about this upset 1943 Bombay penny, and if they know anything about it.

Oh dear. I'm terribly sorry, but my knowledge of Pre-Decimal varieties and errors would fit on one side of a 3d.

I've done some searches in The Australian Coin Forum and can't find any references to upset 1943 Pennies there either.

Difficult to comment without a photo.

However small upsets are not uncommon for this date.
I checked a few I have and most were slightly upset.

I've been able to find some very helpful details about all pre-decimal coins on http://www.triton.

I knew I had " somewhere " a Sunday Telegraph November 28, 1965, article which lists the, then, values of most known upset pennies. I kept this article from my younger Sunday morning newpapers selling days on the corner of Grey and Fitzroy sts. St.Kilda. This area was very " educational " for me.

As Murphy's law has it, I was looking for something else and, luckily, I found this P.21 article from 1965.

A fascinating list of upset pennies and their, then, values, from 1916 to 1963. One of the more valuable pennies on the list is a 1950 Perth penny at 6 o'clock valued at 100/- ( shillings ) in Fine and 110/- in EF. The 1950 Perth penny has 22 o'clock varieties from 1 o'clock to 11.30.

The 1962 and 1963 pennies, according to the list, are the most extensive rotated issues - 23 different o'clock rotations. Interestingly, the 1963 Perth penny at 6 o'clock is 100/-, 6.30 110/- and the 7 o'clock 120/- in fine condition.

I hope the above newpaper article is of some interest to other ACC forum members.

Yes,Thanks for making the effort,i also did a Paper Run/Route in the 1960's and the number of articles on Coins as we headed to Decimal Currency was mindblowing,a daily event with papers and Weekly with the magazines.
I've spent countless hours trying to find them with no success, apparently the Sydney Mirror and(or?) Sun from that period go online later this year so research on the 1919 DD and 1930 Pennies will keep me occupied.
