It says 5.00, but what would it weigh if it were made of copper?

Cupro-nickel coins frequently go this color when exposed to the elements or buried for a few months - ask any metal detector user.

Welcome to the forum, Lulu. Not sure what it would weigh if made of pure copper, but 5.000 grams is the normal weight of a nickel (+/- .194g mint tolerance). I think that's pretty good confirmation that this is environmental damage, not an off-metal strike.

Piece of the exact same size made of pure copper would weigh 5.02 grams. the density of copper and nickel are almost the same Copper is 8.96 and nickel is 8.90. The density of the copper nickel alloy is 8.92 and pure copper is 8.96. So a pure copper five cent piece is VERY slightly heavier but WELL within the tolerance range. So weight tells you nothing.

@ Conder101...great added bit of information..Thanks
Also, isn't copper a softer metal than nickel and had this coin been made from copper wouldn't it show more hits from circulation (assuming that it has been circulating since its mintage)?...Just wondering
