I don't see much mentioned about this RPM.

Curious to get thoughts on this variety on how difficult they are to find and/or popularity and any other items of interest.

Thanks

Not sure of actual popularity but it is a Coneca "Top 100" RPM. https://conecaonline.org/top-100-rpms/ Nice find!

In the mid=grades this RPM can easily add $20 to the value of the coin, but in the top grades the coin itself is so expensive that it doesn't really add much. That is in general. If you find a collector really looking for a top example then a fair premium might be had but you would have to wait to find that right person.

I put mine at AU-58 but have always wondered if it might slide in as MS and really be worth something.

Stunning example either way - is the price pop worth the cost?

For something that looks like it could grade MS, but shows just enough flattening on the beard and cheek to be questionable, I think grading would be worth the cost. Most collectors at that level want a slabbed coin and don't want to do it themselves and take a chance. Thus the value is more for one that is already done and with grade known. That's an opinion, not a fact, but generally what I see for coins in that price range.

The problem is more with the RPM. It would hold a lot more value if PCGS would put that on a slab, which as far as I know they won't (I could ask them as they have been known to do requests). It either gets an annoying little homemade sticker noting the RPM or has to be done by one of the other TPGs. And that is why this one isn't slabbed at this point, just don't see an option better than keeping it as is for now.

Back to the OP's question about popularity, I'd say for this one it's moderate at best. Possibly because the nice coins with the RPM are out of the price range for a lot of folks just looking to add an RPM and so there is no big surge in demand. There just aren't a lot of collectors who just have to have one, and there are enough of these out there that those folks do have one.

Anyway, in general if the coin itself is already expensive, like a 1909-S, then an RPM on it doesn't add a great deal more value.

There is one graded on PCGS and it doesn't mention a RPM. AU-55 $135.00

tb,

I have two of these, so they can't be terribly rare. Shocked that they don't appear in the CPG. Your example above is a real beauty!

I like the variety . I have seen a few on ebay that I passed on because I found an unattributed example about 25 years ago. Even then it wasn't cheap for a unc. 1912-S . I think it was about 100 dollars.

This one is actually the plate coin at Coppercoins
They can be found with a bit of looking though usually in a lower grade.

Great information. Thanks for all of the responses.

It really is a nice, early RPM. Back when LCs were well done.
