Good morning,
I found this coin with what looked like a "smudged" date, and some missing reverse elements. It seems like wear and tear, but it could also be something to do with the die? Do you have tips and tricks to decipher one versus the other? Thanks in advance, I am new to this. Genevičve

And I also have these "flat" date and WE TRUST. Is this from being run under a car or something?

to CCF. Damage on the date and maybe a Struck Through Grease on the reverse.

Just 'coin abuse' on the date area. Reverse area on 'States' is a different issue:

Struck though grease issue often lean the devices looking wider and lower in height:

If the design is missing and the rims are present, it is a Struck Through Grease issue:
Need-Education-On-How-To-Identify-Normal-Wear-And-Tear-Vs-Degraded-Dies
Not to be confused with low pressure strikes:

Note the weakness on the deeper devices? Also note the rims are missing. Possible this planchet was under weight, thus the weaker strike or if the weight is normal, then the low pressure strike issue is the cause.

You can see a hint of an outline of the strike, just not a full pressure strike.
Seeing them side by side will show you the differences:

Die issue:
If the die is over polished the devices will be thinner on that area:
Need-Education-On-How-To-Identify-Normal-Wear-And-Tear-Vs-Degraded-Dies
So when the field is reduced in size to remove undesirable events (die clashes/die dents/gouges/ Feeder Finger Damage) this reduction on the die will weaken devices where the polishing happens:

(Possible damage to the edge of the die from dropping on floor or against another die)

(Die clash removal)

So when these events happen, these affected areas are abraded (removed/weaken) from the die.

Feeder Finger Damage that was polished away after this die event happened to the die:

Hope this info helps?

Coop, if it is a matter of die design and not a Struck Through Grease issue then why is it not on "all" memorial cents?
