So I was trying to get my filtering right on my light and decided to look through some SMS half dollars I have from a couple sets I opened a while back and I must have over looked this completely because I missed it the first time. I'm fairly certain this is WWHO-003 as it has all of the same split serifs and tripling but I would appreciate the opinions. You can compare mine to the ones here on the wexlers site listed WWHO-003 https://doubleddie.com/1141429.htmlMy photos may not be great but they are identical to the wexlers listing and I am still messing around with my filter so bare with me. All the photos are the same coin, just one is in colour and the other is in black and white. If I am correct and this is a DDO, should I be getting it graded? or would a 2x2 be fine. Thanks in advance. It definitely looks like some doubling is going on with your coin. The experts here will probably ask to see full pics of your coin to evaluate grading. I'd definitely put in a 2x2.

Here are some full pics of the obverse and reverse, along with other pics showing the split serifs. Here is a photo of "IN" from "IN GOD WE TRUST" showing split serifs on the top of the N, there is splits in the top of the "I" as well but due to lighting you cant see it. Here is the "G" in "IN GOD WE TRUST" showing a split in the top of the G and on the top left of the D if you can see it. Here is the "TRUST" in "IN GOD WE TRUST" showing a close spread on the tops of "UST" and on the top left arm of the T. Hopefully these are good enough photos. I will try to take better ones.

But did anyone note the listing for these dies. the WWDDO-001, 002, and 003 issue? First and Second paragraph: Quote:Significant changes have been made to the 1966 Kennedy half dollar obverse doubled die listings due to the discovery of three different obverse doubled working hubs. The reassignment of numerous 1966 Kennedy half dollar obverse doubled die listings as being from the obverse doubled working hubs left huge "holes" in the obverse doubled die listings for this date. As an example, there were once 37 listings for the 1966 obverse doubled dies. Now there are just 12 working dies and the three working hubs. Many listings were assigned new numbers in order to fill the gaping holes in the listings. Notations of these changes are made for each of the affected varieties. ( underline added by coop) So John is not listing these. These are "Working Hub Issues". Just denoting the issue on the first three listings with the double 'WW' denotation.

Thanks for the reply coop, always appreciated. What does a working hub "issue" mean exactly if I may ask, does that mean that the ones listed as WWHO-001-002-003 are not DDO's? Earlier today I started looking on variety vista and other sites because I only looked on the Wexlers site before I posted this and now I'm really not sure which listing this would be, on Variety Vista it looks like the one they have listed as 1966 DDO-002 which you can see here. http://www.varietyvista.com/12%20Ke...6PDDO002.htmIm still looking for a listing that matches, there are a few that look similar and all the changes in the listings for the 1966 SMS half dollar have me somewhat confused.

Here is the steps necessary to create a die: 1. Design is created to make the Master hub. (note only one of these made) All the design is passed on from this master hub. (Positive, which means it looks like a coin) 2. Note the next step is the master dies are created. (Usually 2 but could be more if a lot more issues is noticed later) This is a negative. Which means it it a mirror of a coin. The fields are the outside of the die, the raised areas are the lowest areas on the master die. 3. Working hubs. Several. These are a positive (Looks like a coin) if there is an issue with a working hub, several dies could have the same exact doubling making them common, not unique like a doubled die would be. Because these are positives, they look like coins. But note the lugs on the outside edges of the hubs? 4. Working dies. These are negatives to create positive coins. The devices are just like the master die opposites of a coin. And many working dies are created from the working hubs. Note on this image: On the left is a working hub, and on the right, the working die. How to tell the differences? Note the lugs that are incuse on the hub, the lugs are raised on the die. Note the die blank. The new hubbed die now needs to be made the correct size: CoopHome Master hub Master Dies Working Hubs Working Dies

Thank you for the very detailed reply coop, I'm glad I finally know the steps on how a die is made.
So if this coin is WWHO-003 then it would be considered common? I'm still not quite sure exactly what I'm looking at (if it is common or not) and would like to put in the appropriate holder or 2x2, if it is not very common and should be graded I have no problem doing that but I don't want to get a coin graded when there is no need.
Again, thank you guys for the opinions!

I would still save them for now. Who knows what the future for these are. So far Wexler is the only one figuring this out. But Variety Vista Pulled their images a while back. They are doubled, but hub doubling would make them common. I wouldn't buy any, but keep the ones you find. Who knows the future for these yet?
