very highly likely it is damage to the coin and not a genuine error coin.

To me it looks like a lamination fault (and a beauty) but a totally battered coin, not circulation wear but fire/beach/burial find. Perhaps whatever trial by fire or whatnot opened up a hidden lamination inside the coin?
