Picked this a while back after seeing the wide rims, knowing it could just be a high grade business strike. The fields have that unique MPL appearance and the edges are quite sharp, not rounded like a business strike. Also a sharp transition from rim to field, and it seems the field isn't sunk as far below the rim as the typical business strike LWC. Not real familiar with diagnostics of the 1916 MPL, and given its rarity I suspect this is just a nice business strike. Also know that fresh dies were used in 1916 so the detail is not surprising. Working on improving photos. Thoughts on whether this should take a trip to a TPG?

I am going out on a limb here and say business strike. To me, not enough definition for a proof coin, but I certainly am no expert on these. I am sure someone more familiar with MPLs will know with more certainty and will chime in soon.

I agree, it is a Business strike. But 1916 coins had a stronger design than other years.

The Mercury shows a stronger design and the Standing Liberty quarters have a lot stronger design that same year. This one is a pattern design for the year:

I have 1916 Cent that looks like your coin with an excellent strike. But the matte proofs were struck twice giving that stronger appearance.

Here is a side by side of the Matte proof cent pricing and the higher price example:

Even the nickels had a very strong design that year:

Same with the half dollars that was a new design that year:
1916-LWC---Thoughts-On-Mpl?
1916-LWC---Thoughts-On-Mpl?

But something that came to me is that the master hubs of the new designs would be stronger the first year they created the master dies from the new design would be the freshest that year. So it is a special year because of the new designs that came out that year.

I can see why you would question this coin . One might even think it could be an impaired Matte Proof with those rims . But I have to agree it's just a nicely struct business strike .
