WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Monday, Feb. 24 marks the 56th anniversary of an unsolved break-in at the First National Bank in White Sulphur Springs. According to a Facebook post, sometime over the previous weekend the suspects had entered the bank by breaking a window in the back of the building. The vault door was "drilled and punched" and the thieves made off with nearly $30,000 in silver dollars and small coins. The coins weighed an estimated 1,700 lbs. During the investigation, police found six and a half rolls of half dollars in the snow. The Meagher County Sheriff's Office said in the post that it had been a snowy weekend. Highway 12 had been closed multiple times on Feb. 22 and 23. Several people in town reported seeing suspicious vehicles in town over that weekend, however, neither of the vehicles were ever found and no suspects have ever been charged. The sheriff's office says the case remains open to this day. Below is a list of the coins that were taken way back in 1964  |

PCGS lists the value of a MS60 1883S at $1,100. MS63 is listed at $2,500.

If the thief's are still alive I would say they have sold off most of those coins.

Yes interesting indeed . These silver Dollars were stolen in 1964 when Uncirculated pieces were a mere fraction over face . Makes you wonder if Mint officials or Government officials had a hand in this heist knowing that 1964 was going to be the last year of 90% silver Business Strikes and with that amount of Silver Dollars ( close to 15,000 )they could make a huge killing in future years . Just Sayin !  |

At the same time they were handing out 100's of thousands of silver dollars a month? With them doing that, why would they be interested is stealing 15,000 coins? At the time they were in the planning stages of striking 50 million more silver dollars.

My guess is the theft has its roots as an inside job made to look like an outside job.
All the Perps are probably long gone....as are the coins.

I used to live just South of White Sulpher Springs. And I never once heard of this store. Thanks for finding it and sharing it.
