Noted Seated coin dealer, Gerry Fortin had a pair of 1871 Seated coins (quarter and half dollar) go missing in the mail. Julian Leidman of Bonanza Coins in Silver Springs, MD helps to recover them and uncovers a crime ring. Full story in video by Lianna Spurrier at Newman Numismatic Portal - Happy ending too, as all the bad guys go to jail, client gets his coins back. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/581061 "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Very interesting video. I'm glad it worked out for the parties involved. I despise thieves.

While this is a serious necro bump, I thought I'd add some info that wasn't covered here. For the record I work at Bonanza, so I guess I'm a credible source.
Humorously, at the time this occurred I was in shop working every day, however on the one day I'm out due to an all day allergist appointment I missed the entertainment.
So the inside baseball on this so to speak is somewhat interesting. In the video linked in the article it shows the police coming in and confronting the woman, which is actually not what happened.
What actually happened is that Julian had Paco (the guy who was wearing the grey sweater who initially made contact with her) talk with her and keep her busy while he was on the phone with the police. Due to the fact that even though he was sure they were the stolen coins he needed to verify some information which took time, and because there are usually officers within a few blocks of the store they got there extremely quick. So he actually had them pose as customers while he verified the information, which is pretty darn funny.
I have the video footage of them going into the store and just chilling for 5 minutes while Julian did his thing. It's made even better by the fact as soon as they came in she puckered up really quick.
Once he had the evidence that linked them as one in the same they made the arrest. During the arrest she played dumb and pretended she had no idea why they were happening and maintained that she found the coins on the sidewalk. As to how she knew the value on them? At the time she said google, but later admitted it was the invoice enclosed with the original package.
I'd like to show the video footage, assuming it's still in my google drive somewhere, but even if I do have it I'm not sure if it's legal to share it, but I promise it's pretty funny to watch. Anyway, thought I'd add some more info to the story that wasn't public at the time.
As an additional story, I actually talked about this with Gerry last week when I was on the phone with him. He laughed about it, he thought that her, and how Julian handled the whole thing was the funniest thing ever, which admittedly, it was. Julian is a character for sure.

A most excellent update Grape! Thank you for that. On a completely different note, I checked out your NGC Registry set, looked at your 1865 Two Cent coin what are the odds! I have a pair of the exact same coins from the exact same die pair, your coin and my two were probably struck a few coins from each other in order.

It was the mail carrier that was stealing the coins. The woman was to split the proceeds of whatever she could get with the mail carrier.

What are the odds of that? Quote: The woman was to split the proceeds of whatever she could get with the mail carrier. Yup

If he says it is OK then you can post it. I would delay doing so though if the legal case is still pending. Once she is convicted though it should be perfectly Ok to post withthe owners permission.

Quote: Once she is convicted though it should be perfectly Ok to post with the owners permission. Totally agree on that point. If Julian says it's good to post then it's good to post, it's his private property and he can authorize the sharing of it, the lady has no rights to privacy since she was in the act of committing a crime in Julian's shop.
