I know theoretically there could be something weighing 0.6 grams on the scale that's out of the croped image zone but it's legit.

@tnotp, we trust you when you say it weighs 3.1g. Remember that in 1982, the mint made both solid copper and copper-plated zinc cents. Yours is copper and weighs what it should (not a mint error).

But they switched to zinc this year so shouldn't it weight 2.5 grams?

Ok sorry just to be clear: in 1982, *both* types were minted. Here is a link from a coinweek article about this:

https://coinweek.com/education/coin...ges-rewards/

There is a nice section talking about the weights of the two alloys.

It's a Large Date Cent, not the Small Date Cent. You're looking for the Small Date Denver cent that weighs 3.1 grams. You have a completely normal coin here. https://www.numismaticnews.net/arti...t-discovered

I would highly suggest you read about the differences between the Small Dates and Large Dates. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...es/1982.html

hard to see, but clear enough to tell that what you have is a large date, not the extremely valuable small date 82-D copper. There are only 3 or 4 82-D small date coppers known. They were all caught in the wild, so there are probably more out there waiting to be found! Happy hunting!
