Someone with little else to do likely applied the punch to the coin long ago. Imagine a bored 30-something guy in a disheveled garage, punching the coin on a late winter's afternoon back in '55. Probably a Saturday.

Collectors of damaged coins would not want to pay more than face value unless the punch mark is interesting, like the counterstamped symbols on one cent coins (one of our members has a large and interesting collection of these), like words or images. This one is definitely boring.
