I'm generally a collector of classic coins and while I have a few moderns like ASE and the 2004/2005 westward nickel series I don't have much in modern.

The question is are there coins that one should save now? As an example the 1914D LWC wasn't generally saved but it ended up being a key date. So if some saved a few rolls they could have a small fortune.

Is there a comparable modern coin? Like the W quarters? Or W cents/Nickels or will moderns never achieve the historical value of classics (no 1916 quarter, 1916D Dime or 1913 S type II nickel)?

It's hard to see any recent circulation coins becoming a key date unless there is a scarce variety that comes about. The W mint mark quarters already command a sizable premium. I don't think buying them on the secondary market and holding them over time will net you very much as many people are holding onto them. It seems like your best bet may be to search uncirculated rolls for the highest mint state coins, get them slabbed by a reputable TPG and hope they are top pop.

Yes save all the 1916D Mercury dimes you find. Also, save all the 1913 Liberty Head Nickels you find in change. Try accumulating rolls of 1955 and 1972 Doubled Die Cents. Also, there is that elusive 1915 Mercury dime.

Then of course there is that rare 1964 Jefferson nickel so many people are looking for.
Other than those, just save all your change just in case.
