I was reading a coin publication today at Barnes and Noble and there was an article that said many of the 2008 mint sets had several dollar coins without any edge lettering. I am not a fan of edge lettering and since such errors like this happen I feel edge lettering should stop.

I think the mint has made the same mistake for all 7 of the releases.
Anyways, I bet the mint will mess up next year's release and reed one of the 2009 ones with the "In God We Trust" reeding from 2007, 2008

If the mint cannot perfect edge lettering and prevent such errors, they should discontinue the edge lettering.

Nah, it is fun to see the mint make more collectible errors.
Why not?
More fun, more collectors, more value. Everyone wins.

I am not a big fan of the edge lettering. My problem is having the date and mint mark on the edge. I can live with the date being on the edge of the Presidential dollar because the issue date can be determined from the President on the coin (in the case of Grover Cleveland, you will also have to look at his term). So my real problem is with the mint mark. Once the coin is in an album, it is not possible to determine the mint. IMHO, this makes a date/mint/(proof) album less appealing.

i like the edge lettering.. Some of the older gold coins have it I think it is neat.. I could see why you wouldnt like it for an album but they should make an album where the coin sits with the edge showing

I think the edge lettering will help coin collecters identify the coins true grade later on.

Quote: Anyways, I bet the mint will mess up next year's release and reed one of the 2009 ones with the "In God We Trust" reeding from 2007, 2008 Quite possibly, especially for the first coin of the year since they will be being made at the same time as the Van Buren dollars for 2008. That means both edge lettering dies will be in use at the same time. That opens the possibility for 2008 coins with th 2009 edge as well. Quote: If the mint cannot perfect edge lettering and prevent such errors, they should discontinue the edge lettering. By that same logic: If the mint can't perfect the production of dies and not make doubled dies they should just stop using dies. And if they can't perfect the production of planchets to get rid of all of the clips, they should stop using planchets as well.

I believe that the "PRESIDENTAL DOLLARS,like most other coins will do well, however sometimes some things need a shot in the arm, if you will, meaning I believe that some ""errors"" are not by accident.MORGANS DAD...
