This just arrived in the mail, and I thought you guys might like her. I have been aware of the small hoard of 1928 SLQ's that showed up a few years ago and have been looking for one for quite some time. When this lady became available I just couldn't resist. Truly a beautiful thing to behold, Hadley... Thanks for sharing. I appreciate coins that are magnificently toned as well. I don't have many silver coins in the collection, but if I see something like this, it makes me think starrting a nice silver type set. Can you tell us something about the hoard that you referred to? Also, what do you think caused this color....bag toning of some kind? CCs

Wow! Is that going in a 7070? A classic coin design in Kodachrome. It will really enhance the type set. Congratulations Hadley!

Why do silver coins start to rainbow color?

Silver can tone almost every color of the color spectrum. It is caused by a chemical reaction amongst the coin and it's environment. Some older albums or envelopes contained sulphur which would account for some beautiful rainbow toned coins such as the SLQ in this thread. Gold and copper coins can also form rainbow toning, but it is much more uncommon.

Can you tell us something about the hoard that you referred to?CopperClassics, sorry to take so long to get back to your questions. I have been attempting to verify the history of this hoard, and am now comfortable it is correct. There was a group (I think between 10 and 15 pieces but am not sure) of very similarly toned pieces that broke about 15 years ago. They were all from the same date and all were high grade (ms66-ms67). There were a couple of pieces from this hoard on the old Anaconda site, but he was asking moon money for them (in the $5000 range) and I had been searching for a more reasonably priced example for years. what do you think caused this color....bag toning of some kind?
They were apparently kept/stored together over a long period of time in some type of holder, all of the coins shared the unique pattern to the toning. I purchased this coin from Mark Feld, who is as straight and honest as they come. Doesn't hurt he is an ex ngc grader, either.
