Question About Walking Liberty Half $ Sets

MrRick Valued Member United States 122 Posts	Posted 12/03/2008 09:19 am Why does this set seem to be split in two whenever I see it listed somewhere? 1916-1940 & then 1941-1947. If you look them up on ebay they have them seperated when you search for them, some people have "sets" listed when they're only '41-'47 & my WL storage albums are the same way. Anyone know? Putting a 16-40 set together is tough ... a BU set would be near impossible and extremely expensive. Normally you'll see the 41-47 sets offered in BU and the earlier set grades from AG to BU. mycrob Pillar of the Community United States 2602 Posts	Posted 12/03/2008 11:39 am The other point to make is that there are no keys or semi-keys from 41-47, but from 16-40, there are at least 5 (maybe more depending on conditions): 16S, 21 P, D, S and 38D. So it is easier and cheaper to put together a complete 41-47 set. Whitman folders can't hold all the coins in one folder, so I guess the naturatal separation of 16-40 and 41-47 occurred. Albums (Dansco, eg) can hold all the coins in a single album. Report this Post to the Staff
biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 12/03/2008 11:47 am The 41-47 is frequently referred to as a short set. I have seen many people try to assemble a high grade set of these that would be virtually impossible for the entire series, say all coins in MS64. That is not terribly expensive(less than $1500) for the short set and would look stunning but to do a full set in MS64 would cost over $200,000. Report this Post to the Staff

Some people want to assemble shiny uncirculated coins, some people prefer a uniform look, and others choose the best they can afford. That's why, for example, Morgan dollar year sets are very popular. If you tried to get a decent (VF) example of every Morgan ever minted you're talking 50 large or so, assuming you could locate an 1895 in that condition...so, a Mercury year set with the best coins you can assemble would be a pretty impressive sight, and you would never have to apologize for NOT having a 1916-D as far as I'm concerned.
