In your collective humble opinions, as a newcomer to this
intriguing subject, is this a collectable item or just worth saving for a rainy day

expat, any answer you get here won't really make a difference for you. YOU are the only one to determine if it's a 'collectable' or not. If it attracts you enough to acquire it, then that alone makes it a collectable; at least for you.
I've 'collected' various things in my life for various reasons (bottle caps, matchbooks, sports/etc cards, comic books, newspaper comics, bottles, rocks, etc), and at the time they all meant something special to me.

I collect these too...so for me collectible at bullion prices. There seem to be way too many and too little demand for any special price premium.

Thanks. I inherited this large collection in January so I am not actually a collector (yet) but I am becoming intrigued by the whole subject. I am just trying to sort this thing, over 600 coins from over 20 countries and make some sense of it all.

Nearly right; it is both.
In other words,
collectible bullion.

In my view it is worth bullion only. Canada has issued many of these gold coins. Some have interesting designs, but this design does nothing for me.

Scrap gold at these stratospheric price levels .
Also one of the ugliest coins ever made in gold in my not so humble opinion .

Keep it only if you like design, or have a sentiments for this specific coin.

All of the 22kt gold $100 coins are worth bullion value only, no premium as a collectible.
It's a matter of supply and demand, too many coins not enough collectors.
