There was an interesting film on television this morning, "Dime with a Halo", made by MGM in 1963.

The dime, a 1929 Mercury, only makes an appearance in the title.

A group of street kids in Tijuana Mexico steal a dime from a church collection box and use it as part of a bet on a horse race.

This dime does look like a Mercury dime also.

Mercury dimes (Winged Liberty Head dimes) were in circulation then.

Kids in Mexico were using American coins? That seems odd given that Mexico had plenty of coins, including silver.

Interesting but I haven't seen the movie. Wonder if it is good luck or not since it has a halo on it?

Here's another one:
Anyone remember the denomination and know the date of the coin in "Ghost"?

Kids in Mexico still prefer American money to pesos, let me assure you.

Not movies per se, but Two Face used a gouged Peace dollar to determine peoples fates. Not sure if that's what was used in the movies or not.

Back before it got all crazy down there we used to make 3 or 4
day trips down to Tijuana (where the movie takes place) every year. U.S. currency circulated right along side of Mexican and in most places we visited, restaurants, race track, jai alai ect., it was preferred. Virtually all business done in the tourist areas was done in dollars.
Americans didn't want to go through the hassle of exchanging pesos for dollars before coming home.

There were two coins, an 1898 Indian head and a wheat. The wheat appeared to be a 1943s copper cent!

Think it was a studio prop?
