I have no knowledge of which of the 5 this one is. Picked up a few hours ago at the annual Manhattan KS Coin Club Show. Indian cents were my quarry but this one caught my eye from a table whose main stock appeared to be old license plates. I digress he did have 2 pages of Capped Bust's that were worse for wear, some looked OK. In a nutshell this one stood out as closest to half normal G4. My crash course coinfact app lead me to think price looked OK at 52 bucks. I also think its been cleaned a few times and last one 30+ years ago?. First Capped Bust for me in fact first ones I ever held , I said whoa "I love these". Half Dollar connoisseurs can you help me out with which variety and grade? Sorry about sideways pics.

Looks like a square base 2, small 8's, large letters. I'd say a solid G-6, but probably details from an old cleaning.

agree with g6. it is not a new orleans coin as the no mint didn't open until 1838.

Very nice G-06. Square base 2, small 8s and large letters variety. Not a bad pickup IMO.

Thank you all. I would have been unable to get this much solid info this fast anywhere else than the forum and I appreciate the help. I think a dangerous precedent began when I held 2 plastic bookpages full with 59 old Capped Bust Halfs. Looks like I got a little lucky on my maiden one. Seller seemed a little puzzled I spent 10 minutes surfing my android trying to get at least a retail ballpark on it. I looked at him (with no clue) and said "52.00 OK a deal". Honestly I wonder if there were any more pleasant sleepers in the other 58 he had for sale? So is this how Capped Bust mania starts - with just that first one ?

LuvmyCAM,

Capped bust halves are among my personal favourite early american coins for a single reason. Price. In the middle grades of VF-30 - EF-40 they are VERY cheap, like under $200 as a choice EF-40. Heck, you can get AU quality examples cheap enough. Point being they're very affordable in good quality, which is always nice. Unless you want an Unc one. Then not so much.
