Hi I came across this 1965 p Memorial penny. I am not really sure what variety it is. I think it was punched on a deformed planchet. Let me know what you think, any opinions are appreciated. Thank you

@MM, it is almost certainly damage rather than a mint error, but to be sure, can you please post the weight and a couple pics of the edge? Thx.

I totally agree with Spence. It looks like PMD. The weight and edge pics will help verify things.

The coin weighs 2.7 grams. And here are the best pictures of the edges I could take.

Why would they do that? Back then you could buy s soda for a dime. So they were trying to trick the vending machines. Still a little to thick work though. It probably got rejected. Needs thinned a bit:

Ok yes those pics are very good (and difficult to take)--thx for adding them to the thread. Yes it does appear that someone has filed or ground down part of the coin.
