Does anyone remember when there were times you could go to a mint and they were selling "collectables", other than coins.Well I was going through some old things and found( totally forgot I had this )a few 1943- steel blanks and the sheet that the planchets were punched out of,does anyone know if this could be certified and authenticated. I would love to do just that, this is an original zinc coated steel sheet with the holes from the blanks punched out from it, with some blanks. This is not an everyday find and I would never part with it, I was just wondering if anyone else had a similiar collectable, and could it be sent in to have it certified, if anyone knows, BE WELL, MORGANS DAD

I do remember when the mint sold collectibles, but not sheets from blanks.

and 1943 was before my time.

Hello, I will get some pictures up asap.I also did not mean to infer that I was the person who was at the mint to purchase this. I was told from a kind, fellow collector,( same person I obtained this from) that this is how this was obtained. He, many years my senior, is a coin dealer, and I trust would be nothing but truthful, as he always is. I was born in 1955,this was obviously well before my time also.MORGANS DAD...

there was someone on this forum awhile back that had exactly the same thing but I don't think he got his from the mint, I think they got theirs from the place that punched out the planchets or something. As far as getting something like that authenticated I have no idea about that part of the question

BRYAN1315, Thank-you for your reply.I will try and see if I can contact one of the top graders and find out if this can be certified.I do not think things like this come along everyday, and I would like to have it encapsulated and authenticated. Thanks to you all for your assistance, MORGANS DAD...

What I think is even more fasinating and amazing about this is how jbuck finds all that stuff. I go out to my garage and stand there wondering why I went there. And jbuck finds anything that was ever said on Earth.
Here is an interesting thought. If a sheet like that was a Zinc plated piece of steel and the cents were puched out of that, how did they Zinc plate the edges of each coin afterwords?
Would a person at the Mint sit there with a Zinc plating pen and coat each coin? Would the Mint people just roll the coins through a Zinc sheet coated with sticky stuff?
I may wonder about this for several seconds and forget the entire post.

jbuck, thank-you for your reply and time in this matter.

just carl, I would like to also thank-you for your time and reply.also I went to visit the collector today and asked this exact question, I was told, that when a planchet is "cut out" the punch press is so strong and quick, it would drag the zinc coating down with the strike. I like how minds think,BE WELL, MORGANS DAD...

They didn't; and therein lies the problem. Just look closely at the edge of any one of the 10,000 steel cents you have in your hoard!

Indeed...working tirelessly in the background like an advanced AI WebBot--who once wrote the Turing Test.
But I won't speculate further, because curiosity always kills Schroedinger's cat.

But I digress; back to the subject at hand: can you weigh/measure one of these Steel/Zinc blanks? That would be a good start.

Once upon a time, I claimed to be an AI experiment... after Just Carl made the same "garage" comment!

One of my favourite bits from Futurama:

TO ALL CONCERNED:I have placed the blank in a micrometer and the thickness is 0.050 and the length is 0.746.I do not have a clue where the "old"scale is. The other blank is 0.742.5 in length, and thickness is 0.048.5. I also measured the "rim" of the blanks, which they have and unlike a LMC having a flat side to the coin, these have a rounded edge and you can clearly see where the coating was pulled down when punched. However the coating does not go all the way through. The rim measures anywhere from 0.054-0.056. I also measured a Lmc-2008 and at the middle of the devices(at lincolns head)the thickness with my micrometer is 0.054.5 and the length is 0.750.The rim on the 2008 LMC measures 0.054-0.059.These are also very good measuring devices.I would think according to these measurements when the blank is struck it spreads out and because of the force of the press, it gets a larger length and larger rim,BE WELL, MORGANS DAD...

The only ones that are plated on the sides is the replated ones, original ones aren't plated on the edge
